It’s easy to pick up your phone when you need to answer a tax question. Maybe you mailed a payment and wondered if it was posted. Maybe you filed weeks ago and want to know where your refund is. I’ve tracked a payment several times a day, even though I knew it probably hadn’t changed. Tax information can feel the same way. Having an app makes it easy to check, but it often doesn’t tell you what to do.
This is why the IRS’s latest app caught my attention. On September 25, 2026, the agency replaced IRS2Go with the new IRS app. The familiar tools remain, and some useful account features have been added. If you are a small business owner trying to keep up with personal tax payments or an IRS notice, the difference between seeing information and understanding it is the issue.

IRS2Go Is Now the IRS App: What You Can Do on Your Phone and What You Can’t

What’s Different
The old IRS2Go app lets you check a refund, reach payment options, and find free filing help. The updated IRS app makes those services available without signing in. If IRS2Go is already on your phone, you don't need to download it yourself. Automatic updates should replace it for you, or you can update it through the app store. New users should start at the official IRS app page rather than an advertisement or a link in a text message.
Signing in opens selected Individual Online Account services. Depending on what is available for your account, you may see balances, payment activity, certain notices and letters, tax records and transcripts, amended-return status, and your Identity Protection PIN. The IRS says the app is free and available for Apple and Android devices. It does not replace the full IRS website or your online account.
Fewer Guesses About Your Taxes
Let’s say you paid estimated income tax and can’t remember whether you selected the correct tax year. Your confirmation is the first thing to check. The app should help you review payment activity after signing in. If the year or amount looks wrong, investigate it promptly rather than assume everything will sort itself out when you file.
Refund tracking is another useful feature it has, especially when clients ask whether a return was accepted. The refund tool has three stages:
Return Received
Refund Approved, and
Refund Sent
You can usually check a current-year e-filed return 24 hours after filing. As you might already know a mailed return can take about four weeks before status appears. You’ll need your:
Social Security number or ITIN
Filing status, and
Exact whole-dollar refund amount
A status of “received” is not a promise of a payment date. The tool gives a personalized date after processing and approval.
An easy mistake to make is refreshing the refund screen every hour. The IRS generally updates the tracker once a day, usually overnight. Checking again at lunchtime will rarely tell you anything new. Set a reminder to check the next day and get back to running your business.
The App Has Limits
The expanded account features are for individual accounts. The IRS says the app doesn’t currently include Business Tax Account or Tax Pro Account functions. If you need to investigate payroll tax deposits, a business return, or a company notice, use the relevant IRS business account or other IRS features. Seeing your personal balance in the app doesn’t tell you whether your business payroll taxes are current.
The app can show certain notices, but it can’t decide whether the IRS is right. If you receive a letter, read the entire notice, check the tax year and response deadline, and compare it with your return, records, and payment confirmations. A notice may request information or propose a change. The right response depends on what it actually says. Do not tap “pay” just to make an uncomfortable number disappear before you understand why it’s there.
One more thing, the ordinary Where’s My Refund? tracker does not report amended-return refunds or refunds from business return. The new app may show amended-return status when you sign in, and the IRS offers a separate Where’s My Amended Return? tool. Choose the tool that matches the return you filed.
Two Ways To Use The App
First, save the payment confirmation whenever you pay. Record the amount, date, tax year, and payment type in your bookkeeping or tax doc file. If you are making a personal estimated-tax payment for self-employment income, select the correct year and reason for payment, before submitting it. A convenient payment button cannot fix a misapplied payment.
Second, use the app as a starting point when something doesn't look quite right. Compare its information with the underlying return, transcript, notice, or bank record. If the issue involves your business or several tax years, gather those documents before calling the IRS or speaking with a tax professional. You’ll receive better answers if you have documentation to back up what you did.
Finally, watch out for look-alike apps and messages announcing a required “account update.” The IRS says it will not ask for sensitive personal or financial information in an unsolicited text, email, or pop-up. Go directly to IRS.gov/help/app for verified download links. Convenience is valuable, but protecting access to your tax information is worth the little extra time.
The new app can make routine tax tasks less frustrating. Use it to check facts, keep good records, and come up with questions that should be asked early. Remember, when the facts don’t add up, you do not have to figure out the next step alone.
